About Doppelmayr Seilbahnen GmbH
The family company Doppelmayr was founded in 1893 in Wolfurt, Vorarlberg. In 1937 it manufactured the first ski lift on the Arlberg - marking the start of a ropeway tradition in Austria and beyond. In 2002 Doppelmayr merged with Garaventa, a leading ropeway manufacturer from Switzerland, combining their experiences and expertise. Today the Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group has subsidiaries in over 40 countries worldwide and has built more than 14,800 installations for customers in 91 nations.
Main Activity Area: Doppelmayr/Garaventa is specialised in ropeway engineering focussing on four different fields of application: winter tourism, summer tourism, material transport and urban transit. Therefore you can find its ropeways not only in the skiing regions of the Alps, Northern America or New Zealand, but also for instance in China, Bolivia, Vietnam or Qatar - as part of a public transport network, as an attraction at a leisure park or as a shuttle service to airports and exhibition centers.
Research Area: Doppelmayr/Garaventa is world leader in the manufacturing of ropeway systems such as gondolas, chairlifts or cable cars, reversible aerial tramways and funicular railways. Next to tourism and the transportation of different kinds of materials the Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group also uses its expertise to address the challenges of urban transport in highly populated cities all over the world - like Las Vegas, La Paz, London, Algiers, Zurich, Istanbul, Baku or Singapore.
Achievements: Doppelmayr (as well as Garaventa) has been a pioneer in the manufacturing of ropeways inventing new ways of transporting people and material. For instance in 1972, Doppelmayr built its first detachable gondola lift in Mellau (Austria). In 1999 the first cable liner shuttle by Doppelmayr was opened in Las Vegas - connecting the major transport hubs and the world famous Excalibur, Luxor and Mandalay Bay hotels. In 2016 Doppelmayr built the world’s longest ropeway in Vietnam with a length of 6,326 m in a single section and climbing the vertical height of 1,410 m.
Staff Qualifications: Employees who are working in research and development at Doppelmayr/Garaventa usually have a degree of a technical college or University (of applied science) in mechanical or electrical engineering, mechatronic or similar fields. The company supports the so called “Electrical Engineering Dual” - a bachelor study model at the University of applied science FH Vorarlberg combining studying for a degree with vocational training in a company. The Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group also offers the opportunity to students to do internships and it supports academic research in relation to ropeways and its subsidiaries.
